Hip Update

Yesterday we took Callie to her hip appointment at Children's.  They did an ultrasound on both sides and she was so good during it.  At one point she even fell asleep.  The lady said she didn't think that she had ever had that happen before...that's our sleep lovin girl!

We found out that she does have Hip Dysplasia in both hips.  Basically that means there is a problem in the formation of the hip joint.  On a mild-moderate-severe scale, we were told she is mild to moderate on both sides.  Of course this is not the news we were hoping to hear, however we are very thankful that this is something that can be fixed.

Today we heard from our pediatrician who referred us to a Center for Pediatric Orthopedics.  We called them and should be hearing back tomorrow to let us know the soonest we can get her in.  She will be fitted for a Pavlik Harness that she will need to wear to help properly position her hip joints.  All the details on that (how long she will be in it, how often she will need to wear it, etc.) we won't know until we meet with the ortho.

Like I said before, we are so thankful that this is something that is treatable and that she is young enough that she won't even remember going through it.  I will document her progress here as we move forward with everything.  Thank you for the prayers, emails and phone calls the past couple days.

What a love! You have a great attitude about all of this...have you done a lot of research? I know in the hospital, that the babes usually spend a lot of time in their harness...from what I hear, it's overwhelming at first, then it just becomes a way of life.
Good luck to you...prayers coming your way and will look forward to the updates!

Oh, Honey! It's good that this can be corrected, although I know from experience that it is tough to see your baby go through stuff like this. My prayers are with you, Laura and hang in there!

I'm praying, Laura. She's such a good baby, hopefully that will make this easier for her and you. Is there anything I can do?

man Laura I am so sorry that you are going through this. This all brings back so many memories for me. I actually started crying when I got your tweet about her diagnosis. Everything will be ok and the harness will work! It is a pain and looks nuts and clothes just don't work very well with it but you can dress her in all sorts of cute onsies!!! :) and the most important thing is that it will realign her hips and make her even more perfect than she is right now!!

She is so precious. I'm sorry you have to go through this with her, yet so grateful it is treatable. And you're right, she won't remember a thing.
Praying for continued strength and peace for you and Matt.

oh laura i am sorry you are going through this. we are going through some medical things with E too. they think she might have sensorineural hearing loss so we have to get a sedated exam of her brain and the way she processes sound on the 18th. it's hard knowing your kids have to go through this stuff. but, like you, we are staying focused on the positives - we have good health insurance, it is treatable with hearing aids and therapy. anyway, we'll know more soon.

hope callie does well with the harness.

blessings to you and yours!

Praying for your baby girl. That last pic is so adorable with her sleeping away. Just a thought, have they mentioned chiropractic treatment at all?

In any case, she and you will be fine. Just a little bump in the road :-)
